No. 273, Alice Makes Shortbread
The pounds of cold, hard, pale yellow butter that stood in a row softening on the counter reminded Alice as soon as she stepped into the kitchen that today was the long-anticipated Shortbread Day. A glass jar filled with sugar stood nearby. Chef walked in carrying a big, dusty sack of flour. "Alice, it's going to be a long day," she sighed, knowing they had promised to donate an untold number of shortbread-filled baskets to the children of military parents. "A long but delicious day!" Alice declared. To her, nothing was sweeter than the chance to help.
